The group’s National Council on Thursday reportedly gave the go-ahead to allow openly gay boys into its ranks. Tell us what you think of the decision.
A boy’s sexual orientation may soon be moot when he goes to join one national organization. According to reports Thursday evening, the Boy Scouts of America voted to drop sexual orientation as one component of membership into the youth group. While the organization’s decision paved the way for openly gay boys to become Scouts, the group’s leadership stopped short of allowing gay Scout leaders. Want to blog about this topic? E-mail Community Editor Liz Kennedy to find out how you can become a Local Voices blogger on your hometown Patch. Not all Scout troops may be receptive to the change. In previous discussions over the issue, BSA spokesman Deron Smith said that under the then-proposed change, the BSA would not dictate a position to the …

U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, touched on the hot-button issue during an address to the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce. Tell us what you think of Gingrey’s comments.
The phrase “legitimate rape,” uttered by the now former U.S. Rep. Todd Akin last August in the midst of his re-election campaign, is one he and Republicans likely hoped most Republicans would forget last year. Akin’s comments suggesting that victims of "legitimate rape" have a built-in defense against pregnancy likely played a factor in the Missouri Republican's political defeat in November. While Akin’s comments became part of the political landscape in 2012, they have resurfaced in the early days of 2013, but this time in Georgia. U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Marietta, said as he spoke to the Smyrna Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce that the former representative was “partly right.” Here’s what Gingrey, an OB-GYN who also …

I need a place to put my two dogs for three nights.
I'm nervous, OK? I'm one of those people who worries about the stress on my dogs by applying my human emotions on Daisy and Scout Finch. But here's the thing: I really need a vacation. I'm able to get away for a few days and I have no idea what to do with my puppies. I could ask my neighbors to walk them, but I've never really talked to my neighbors. I could put them in boarding, but I'm worried that will freak them out. I could pay someone else to check in on them once or twice a day. They're super low maintenance. They need a walk in the morning and a walk at night and to be fed at night. Help me, please?

Officials recently said capturing the alleged war lord is harder than they people think.
After gaining international attention through a 30-minute Youtube video, Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, is still loose in Africa. Although Americans are pressuring lawmakers and officials to capture Kony, those only familiar with the video might be underestimating what it takes. Obama administration officials told a Senate subcommittee that efforts to capture Kony are complicated by inhospitable terrain and communication breaks between coordinating countries, according to a CNN report. Right now there are 100 special forces advisers are hunting for Kony, the report said.

Is there any excuse to calm a tantrum with police handcuffs?
A Milledgeville girl was handcuffed after throwing a fit in school that knocked over a shelf and injuring the principal, the Chattanooga Times-Free Press reports. The 6-year-old was charged with simple assault and damage to property.

Can you get by with only having one vice?
This year is the first time since seventh grade that I will not be going to the tanning bed religiously. I'd love to say it was because I had some great change of heart, but it isn't. I just don't have time to lay still for 15 minutes a day. I always justified it like this: You're allowed one vice. Mine was tanning. Still with the personal attacks? I still have not made any discriminatory remarks. Your insistence that I am some discriminatory noun( racist, bigot, homophobe, etc) does not change anything. When people insist on being defined by their condition (sex, race, religion, philosophy, etc) they will find resistance from those who do not care to indulge them. They can do, be, act as they like; they do …   more ›
