Holly Springs school ranks in Newsweek's best 2,000 high schools.
Some Cherokee schools have aced Newsweek/The Daily Beast's list of best 2,000 public high schools in America. According to the list, Sequoyah in Holly Springs is No. 580, while Creekview in Canton ranks at No. 1369 out of the top 2,000 public high schools in the country. Nearby in Woodstock, Etowah High School is No. 1719, while Woodstock High is No. 1772. Newsweek’s ranking highlights high schools across the nation that have proven to be the most effective in turning out college-ready grads. The president of the school's new Equestrian Club won two events at a weekend horse show in Alpharetta.
A Sequoyah High School student has won two national championship titles at a national horse show. Rising junior Ashley Bates, who is also the president of the school's newly-formed Equestrian Club, participated in the Riders Interscholastic Federation of North America (RIFNA) National Horse Show at In Your Dreams Farm in Alpharetta on May 18-19 and brought home national titles in the Hunter Over Fences and Hunter on the Flat events. She was joined at the competition by fellow team member and rising junior Brooke Redfern. Both equestrians advanced to the national competition due to their excellent horsemanship. Hickory Flat's Sequoyah High School is once again in the national spotlight. The school has been named to the 2013 Best High Schools in the U.S. list published by U.S. News & World Report. The school, which is led by Principal Elliott Berman, is ranked at No. 18 in Georgia and No. 1,033 in the U.S. and received a National Silver Medal. Creekview High School, Etowah High School, Sequoyah High School andWoodstock High School have been named to the list of top U.S. high schools published by The Washington Post. The America's Most Challenging High Schools list ranks schools based on factors including the percentage of graduating seniors who take Advanced Placement (AP) tests. Only nine percent of the roughly 22,000 public high schools were named to the 2013 list. The Holly Springs high school is offering juniors and seniors the opportunity to shore up their test-taking skills in advance of the SAT.
Although Sequoyah High School, along with the rest of the Cherokee County School District, is on spring break starting Monday, that doesn't mean it's time to start winding down the 2012-13 school year. Starting April 15, the high school will continue its "SAT Lunch" prep courses, designed for juniors and seniors who will be taking the crucial test this spring. The school is hopeful that more juniors will take advantage of the prep course, because they are the ones most likely to take the SAT in the coming months. During the weeks of April 15 and April 22, math and writing tutors will be available during lunch periods to assist students in areas they may be struggling in. Local restaurants will attend the band fundraiser, and be accompanied by small ensembles of the Band of Chiefs.
The Sequoyah High School Band of Chiefs just got back from marching in the St. Patrick's Day Parade in New York City, but that doesn't mean they're taking a break to rest on their laurels. Ensembles from the Band of Chiefs will be playing at "A Taste of Sequoyah," a fundraiser on Tuesday, March 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school. Hosted by the Sequoyah High School Musical Arts Booster Club and The Sequoyah Instrumental Music Foundation, the taste will feature the culinary stylings from 13 local restaurants accompanied by live music from the Band of Chiefs. The Sequoyah High School Band of Chiefs will soon be marching down Fifth Avenue in New York City as part of the 252nd Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade. The 85-member band will join 250,000 other participants in the festivities, which begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. The Sequoyah Band is not expected in the staging area until 12:20 p.m. Follow this link to view the live stream of the parade.
