Avery Elementary School inducted 50 students in to the National Junior Beta Club late last month. Students received this honor by demonstrating worthy character, academic excellence, and a consistent commendable attitude. The Club’s purpose is to promote scholarship, leadership, and citizenship at the school and in the community. Cherokee County School Board Chair Janet Read, who is seated onstage, was the ceremony’s guest speaker. Creekview High School students won the team competition in their division at the Georgia Southwestern State University annual math tournament. High school students from all over Georgia squared off Friday, Jan. 25 at Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) to put their math skills to the test, according to a release from ReadMedia. The School of Computing and Mathematics at GSW held its 39th annual mathematics tournament. Sponsored by the AT&T Foundation, the competition is a qualifier for the state math tournament. Teams from 45 high schools competed in the written and ciphering problem-solving portions. In all, 422 students competed in the event. A Cherokee County high school senior has been named Kennesaw State University’s Outstanding Dual Enrollment Honors Student for 2012-2013. Emily Solon, a senior at Creekview High School, began taking classes at Kennesaw State during her junior year. She has a 3.9 GPA and is on track to earn 52 college credit hours by the time she graduates from Creekview in May. The award will be presented during a ceremony in April. Solon has been accepted into Georgia Tech, where she will pursue a degree in biomedical engineering. She is an environmental science and pre-calculus supplemental instruction leader at Kennesaw State and also also has been a tutor in the school’s math lab. A bow hunter on property near Mountain Road Elementary had the school's administrative team activating a "Code Red" alert that diverted buses to an area high school, locked down the school and brought police to the scene. At 6:50 a.m. the administrative staff at the school responded to the sighting of a man believed to be carrying a weapon near the school After diverting the buses that were en route to the school, the staff worked with the Cherokee County School District's Police Department, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, the school district's Transportation Department and the Office of School Operations. Fulton Science Academy High School's governing board meets Thursday to make its decision on whether they want a hearing before the Fulton County Board of Education.
Fulton Science Academy High School's governing board will decide whether the school will ask for a hearing to fight a push by Fulton County Schools to close the school by terminating its charter contract. Principal Namik Sercan said the public school's governing board is working on its written response to each allegation raised in the IAG audit. The formal decision to appeal will be made Thurdsay, Dec. 13, he said, while the response will take a few more days to finalize. Sercan, responding to questions about the audit report's claims that Fulton Science Academy High failed to meet enrollment requirements, said its enrollment has grown for five years out of seven. The Fulton County Board of Education today, Dec. 11, approved a recommendation to start the process to close Fulton Science Academy High School at the end of the school year. Superintendent Robert Avossa first made the recommendation to terminate the school's charter at a school board work session on Dec. 4. Avossa based his recommendation on what staff reports call "a history of insufficient governance capacity and poor decision-making on the part of the school’s governance board." An independent audit released to the school board on Dec. 4 was said to show the Fulton School System has had concerns with the school throughout its seven-year history. Creekland Middle School recently hosted a Cherokee Sheriff’s Office program for its students on cyberbullying and its consequences. Principal Dr. Deborah Wiseman and the school’s media specialist, Anne West, who teaches information literacy skills to the students, said they recognized the need for the program when the results of a student technology survey were compiled. The majority of Creekland MS students said they didn’t know anyone who had been bullied through the use of technology nor had they been bullied, according to the survey results. “No matter how small the percentage of students that state that they have been bullied or know someone who has is, it’s always unacceptable,” Ms. West said.
