Cherokee Manager To Chair Bob Barr's Congressional Campaign

County Manager Jerry Cooper will chair Barr's campaign in Cherokee County.

A familiar Cherokee County face has been tapped to help Bob Barr get elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. Barr's campaign on Monday announced County Manager Jerry Cooper will serve as the campaign chair in Cherokee County. "Jerry is a key leader in Cherokee County, well known as a man of character and integrity, and I am glad to have him as a part of my campaign team," Barr wrote on this website. Cooper said he's looking forward to the new challenge.  "I am honored that Bob Barr has placed his confidence in me to be part of his campaign team," he added.  A credentialed International City/County Management Association member, Cooper has both a bachelor's and master's degree in public administration from the University of Arkansas. …

Petruzielo: State Budget Numbers Given To Cherokee Chamber "Inaccurate"

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo is questioning the accuracy of numbers State Rep. Calvin Hill provided to the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce's board of directors.

Cherokee Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo has raised concerns about numbers distributed by State Rep. Calvin Hill (R-Hickory Flat) that say the state has increased funding to education. In a memo, Petruzielo contradicts the report Hill distributed to the Cherokee County Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors that no reductions to Quality Basic Education funding, or QBE, were made for Georgia's fiscal year 2014 budget. Petruzielo writes in his memo that the Cherokee County School District recently learned it will have to once again swallow $24.8 million in austerity cuts for the 2013-14 school year. He also notes the county's equalization grant, which totals $500,000, has been eliminated. The superintendent goes on to say …

Should Chip Rogers Have Presided Over Republican Convention?

The former state senator and current Georgia Public Broadcasting employee was asked to serve as the chair of the 11th Congressional District convention held in Marietta over the weekend.

A former Georgia state senator made a scheduled appearance into the political arena over the weekend.  Former Sen. Chip Rogers of Woodstock served as the convention chair of the 2013 Georgia Republican Party 11th Congressional District Convention held at Roswell Street Baptist Church in Marietta on Saturday.  Rogers received many accolades from Republicans in the district, and several folks attending the convention expressed their feelings on the former senator's Facebook profile.  "Kudos to Chip Rogers for his masterful chairmanship at yesterday's District Convention," wrote former Cherokee County Republican Party Chair Bob Rugg in the Cherokee's Republican Party Facebook group wall. "The task is always made more difficult when attempting…

Frankly, Mr. Rogers is the ideal person to chair a Republican Convention. He's a sanctimonious right wing jerk who is fixated on conspiracy theories and who has a tax payer financed job to go along with the tax payer financed bailout of one of his bad investments. By all means Rogers should chair every GOP event that comes along. He reminds them that they will ultimately be what he is now: out of…   more ›

Should Gov. Nathan Deal Take Sides on Integrated Prom?

A nonprofit organization is taking Gov. Nathan Deal to task for his neutral position on teens in Wilcox County, Ga., organizing an integrated prom.

Better Georgia, a progressive nonprofit organization, is criticizing Gov. Nathan Deal for "not taking sides" on an effort by four teenage girls to organize its first integrated prom in Wilcox County, Georgia. Gov. Nathan Deal was asked last week whether he'd supported the high school students' efforts, which he declined through a spokesman.  "This is a leftist front group for the state Democratic party and we're not going to lend a hand to their silly publicity stunt," Spokesman Brian Robinson said

Deal needs to get his head focused on economic issues and shut up. Having said that he really cant do much for the economy either since he was bankrupt and obviously cant manage his own finances. Im a republican and while the guy seems like an ok person, he is no leader and no example. We could have elected Herman Cain on write in and this would have all been handled by now and we could all be …   more ›

Cherokee School District Custodian: "I'm Begging For My Job"

The Cherokee County School Board heard from two custodians who oppose the district privatizing its grounds and custodial services.

Two custodians pleaded with the Cherokee County School Board to keep its grounds and custodial employees in-house. The board on Thursday took comments from two men, William Exton and Ronald Carey, who opposed the board's decision to explore privatizing both grounds and custodial services.  Exton, who said he's aware of the economic downturn's impact on the Cherokee County School District, added he isn't seeing the district consider cutting salaries of school administrators or central office employees. Carey, another custodian, added he was "begging for my job." The possible outsourcing, he added, was "disgusting to me."  "They are not the cause of this board having a problem with their economic situation," he added of his co-workers.  …

I have seen how hard the school custodians work, how they stay after school without pay to get a job done, how they come in on their days off when someone else needs help. They're there when the students need help. The custodial staff is dedicated to their schools, their jobs and their students. How well are the outsourced employees vetted? Are our children safe in their hands? We can only hope …   more ›

Rep. Lindsey Jumps Into 11th Congressional District Race

Ed Lindsey is seeking Republican nomination for the U.S. Congressional 11th District, which includes Cherokee County.

Rep. Ed Lindsey (R-Atlanta), who represents the 54th district in the Georgia House of Representatives, announced Thursday that he is seeking Republican nomination for the 11th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. The 11th district stretches from Bartow, Cherokee and the west and northwestern portion of Cobb counties and also includes Buckhead and Sandy Springs. That seat will be soon vacated by Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-Marietta) as he plans to run for the U.S. Senate seat Sen. Saxby Chambliss will not seek re-election to. In an email, Lindsey noted the 11th district is a "wonderful and diverse district where over 700,000 of us have chosen to live, work, play, worship, and strive for better opportunities for our families…

No Funding Relief in Sight For Cherokee School District

The Cherokee County School Board's work session on Thursday yielded no good news going into the early stages of compiling the fiscal year 2014 budget.

While it could be a "flat year" for the Cherokee County School District when it comes to predicting revenue growth, there is still a chance that furloughs could be implemented for the 2013-14 school year. School district staff on Thursday during the school board's work session provided updated information on the financial outlook for the district. They also included information on how the sequestration could impact the district in the future. Candler Howell, assistant superintendent of financial management, warned the district on its dwindling reserve fund balance.  To make up for state funding shortfalls, the district has had to dip into its reserves, and the fund currently has about about $28 million. Howell expressed his discomfort at …
