UPDATED: Holly Springs Approves WellStar Rezoning, But Denies Permit Request

The split decision grants WellStar its rezoning, but denies the permit to build a hospice or hospital.

Editor's note: the story has been updated with reaction from WellStar and Northside Hospital.  The Holly Springs City Council rendered a split decision on two requests from Marietta-based WellStar Health System. The voted to approve a request from the company to rezone 62 acres at the southwest corner of Sixes Road at Interstate 575 from general commercial and mixed use to entirely general commercial. However, it voted to deny granting a conditional use permit to the company to build the hospital or personal care home.  The company would still be allowed to build the health park, which would include a medical office building as it's allowed under general commercial uses.  Both votes were tallied as 4-0-1, with council member Karen Barnett …

WellStar Strikes Back at Cherokee County Leaders

The Marietta-based health care provider has penned a letter responding to some of the concerns laid out last week by the Cherokee County Commission.

In what's becoming a war of words, WellStar Health System has written its own letter responding to concerns outlined by the Cherokee County Commission in the company's request to build a health park and hospital on Sixes Road at Interstate 575.  WellStar is taking issues with County Chairman Buzz Ahrens who, on behalf of the commission, stated concerns about the development's impact on surrounding infrastructure and the impact of building a tax exempt hospital would have on the county's tax digest. WellStar's letter, penned by Marietta attorney Richard Calhoun, points out that Holly Springs records don't indicate the county expressed concerns about a 2005 rezoning of the property to general commercial to accommodate a 422,000 square foot …

Holly Springs Mayor Strikes Back at Cherokee Criticism of WellStar Proposal

Mayor Tim Downing is critical of the county's letter to the city that spells out its concerns about WellStar's proposed development.

Holly Springs Mayor Tim Downing is not mincing words in his response to a letter written by Cherokee County Commission Chairman Buzz Ahrens raising concerns about WellStar Health System's request to rezone property to build a health park and hospital on Sixes Road at Interstate 575. Reached on Monday, Downing took issue with the county's concerns about the development's impact on surrounding infrastructure and on the impact of building a tax exempt hospital would have on the county's tax digest. Downing said when Northside Hospital-Cherokee acquired property between Georgia Highways 20 and 140 to build their replacement hospital, the company did not have the appropriate infrastructure in place.  "There was sufficient amount of time" to put…

Residents To Put WellStar's Plans in Holly Springs Under Microscope

Homeowners' associations along the Sixes Road corridor will hold a meeting for residents to learn more about WellStar's plans to possibly build a facility in Holly Springs.

While WellStar Health System has decided not to proceed with obtaining a green light from the state for a free-standing emergency department in Holly Springs, that isn't stopping residents from organizing to inform their neighbors about the company's plans. A meeting has been set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Liberty Elementary School for residents who live in BridgeMill and along Sixes Road to learn about what WellStar would like to do with roughly 62 acres on the southwest corner of Sixes Road and I-575. Jay Patouillet, president of the BridgeMill Community Association, said the homeowners association of BridgeMill and The Falls of Cherokee decided to organize a meeting to inform residents about WellStar's plans due to the proximity of the …

WellStar Puts Brakes on Emergency Department in Holly Springs

The company is holding off on a proposal to build a stand alone emergency department in the city limits.

WellStar Health System has put off plans to expand into Holly Springs. The company is not pursuing a proposal to build a free-standing emergency department on 62 acres on the southwest corner of Sixes Road and I-575. WellStar last month filed a letter of intent with Georgia Department of Community Health to build the proposed $21 million off-site emergency center, but did not proceed with filing a Certificate of Need review. The CON has to be filed 30 days after a letter of intent is filed with the department.  WellStar Spokesperson Keith Bowermaster said there's "no precedent" in Georgia for a free-standing emergency department to get the CON stamp of approval.  "We are very interested in this clinical model, but [we] elected to not file …
