Mayor Tim Downing is critical of the county's letter to the city that spells out its concerns about WellStar's proposed development.

Holly Springs Mayor Tim Downing is not mincing words in his response to a letter written by Cherokee County Commission Chairman Buzz Ahrens raising concerns about WellStar Health System's request to rezone property to build a health park and hospital on Sixes Road at Interstate 575. Reached on Monday, Downing took issue with the county's concerns about the development's impact on surrounding infrastructure and on the impact of building a tax exempt hospital would have on the county's tax digest. After he was pulled over for running a stop sign, Laurens called Mayor Tim Downing to ask how he can have stop signs removed from entrances to a roundabout in his neighborhood.

Georgia House District 21 candidate Brian Laurens is denying allegations he tried to use his relationship with Holly Springs Mayor Tim Downing to throw out a traffic citation he received in November. The issue came to light Tuesday evening during a debate sponsored by the Cherokee County Republican Party when candidate Scot Turner asked Laurens if he tried to use his "political influence for personal gain" by calling Downing during the incident.  Laurens received a citation on Nov. 4 for running a stop sign in a roundabout off Holly Commons Parkway.  One video (warning: the ending of this video contains language unsuitable for children) posted on the Facebook profile of Franklin Myrick, shows Holly Springs Police Officer Danny West pulling…

Mayor Gets Sheriff's Commendation

Other deputies were honored at Tuesday's Commissioners' meeting.

Holly Springs Mayor and Sheriff's Deputy Tim Downing was recognized for his work in Cherokee County after receiving the Sheriff's Commendation award for 2012. Deputies Steven Prescott, Jason Johns, and Noah Rich, and Sgt. Todd Eilers and Deputy Noah Rich also got a Sheriff's Commendation. Deputies Matthew Verber and Eric Mistretta got a Sheriff’s Citation for Bravery Verber responded to a rape in progress, forced entry into the residence without backup and arrested the suspect. Mistretta responded to a domestic dispute in progress and stopped a kidnapping without backup. The Sheriff’s Life Saving Medal was given to Deputies Liza Robinson, Justin Messenger, Stephen Shumake and Chad Pifer. Robinson used CPR to revive a woman. Messenger …
