'Miracle Balloons' to Take Flight at Kroger

The Holly Springs stores are participating in the annual Children’s Miracle Network fundraiser, which will benefit Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

Kroger store walls throughout the Atlanta area - including Holly Springs and Hickory Flat - will soon be dotted with “Miracle Balloons” in honor of the grocer’s annual fundraiser benefitting Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta – a member hospital of the Children’s Miracle Network (CMN).  From May 19 to June 8, customers can purchase $1 hot-air balloon icons at checkout to help Kroger reach its goal of raising $350,000 to benefit local children’s hospitals. Find the addresses of the two Holly Springs and Hickory Flat Krogers to right of this article. Kroger Recalls Some Mardi Gras King Cakes

Stores in Georgia are part of the recall.

The Kroger - Atlanta Division said on Monday it is recalling some in-store baked Mardi Gras King Cake Cinnamon sold in four states, including Georgia, because it may contain pecans not listed on the label. Customers who purchased the product between Dec. 30 and Feb. 4, should return the product to stores for a full refund or replacement. People who are allergic to pecans could have a serious or life-threatening reaction if they consume this product. For consumers who are not allergic to pecans, there is no safety issue with the product. Kroger stores in three other states are included in this recall including: Alabama, South Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Kroger stores can be found at 5339 Old Highway 5 in Holly Springs and 6766 Hickory …

Too bad that a whole batch of cakes has to be recalled and probably thrown in the garbage just because it didn't list nuts in the ingredients... Nut allergies are usually caused by 'Peanuts' not 'Pecans'... There is a big difference in the two nuts.... Pecans grow on trees; Peanuts grown in the ground (hence the source of the allergies). Have regulations and regulators gotten so 'nuts' that they …   more ›

Daily Poll: The @*%&(#ing T-Shirt

Where do you draw the line for freedom of expression?

On Friday, I was walking through Kroger and saw a woman with a particular four-letter word printed prominently across her shirt. I did a double take to make sure that it was the particular word I thought it was, and was right.  Don’t miss any of the local news you care about. We have laws against certain behaviors which all fall under public lewdness. I think that the T shirts with the words that we all agree cross the line probably fall under this. I'm not a big fan of government sensoring but we don't allow physical defacation in the public arena, so why should we allow verbal defacation?   more ›

Curing the January Blues

Yesterday we talked about the cute clothes-cold weather love-hate relationship. Here's how I turn that hate into "strongly dislike."

I confess: I self-medicate. Well, I self-therapist. January makes me nuts. The mix of Christmas being over, slow news and digging for stories, stormy weather, and exercising again just gets me down. Plus, let’s face it. Being a journalist isn’t the happiest profession I could have chosen. Sure, there isn’t much bad news in Holly Springs, but reading CNN, The Huffington Post and other news websites to make sure nothing big is going on is pretty wearing on the heartstrings. So I have these little things that combat depression. I’m not talking about clinical depression (please, see a doctor and do not try these if you’re clinically depressed or you think you are) but the blues. When I’m more depressed, I read my Bible or call my mama. These …
