School board member Kelly Marlow faced off with Superintendent Dr. Frank Petruzielo on her proposed changes to policy governing when to list financial impact of agenda items.
A proposal to modify a policy regarding school board meeting agendas led to testy exchanges between School Board Member Kelly Marlow and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank Petruzielo during the school board's meeting on Thursday. At the heart of the disagreement was whether the school district should list the financial impact on an agenda request form to be considered by the school board. Marlow, who is in her first term, proposed changing School Board Policy BCBD to read, "When an agenda request form is included, the financial impact section must include a dollar amount. In cases where there is no cost to the District, the dollar amount should be listed as 0. In all other cases, a dollar amount must be listed on the form. It shall be …

The charter school advocate sets her sights on what she'd like to achieve during her first term on the Cherokee County School District.
Kelly Marlow is preparing for her first term on the Cherokee County School Board. Marlow was elected in the July Republican primary to the Post 1 seat, which was created during the reapportionment process. The new district includes the BridgeMill, parts of Sixes Road and Holly Springs and portions of the Toonigh and Univeter areas. Marlow received a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia and before becoming a full-time parent, she worked as a project manager in the health care, technology and alternative energy sectors. She's also worked as a preschool teacher, a substitute teacher, a room parent and a PTA leader. The senate majority leader will be honored at the Georgia Charter Schools Association's conference
Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers (R-Woodstock) will receive the 2012 Charter Schools Impact Award during the 10th annual Georgia Charter Schools Association's conference. Rogers, a strong advocate for school choice, will receive the award during an award ceremony at the conference at noon on Thursday at the Georgia World Congress Center. Along with Rogers, Cherokee County School Board member-elect Kelly Marlow of Canton will also receive the Power to the Parents Award from the organization. Marlow won the July 31 Republican primary for the District 1 school board race. Marlow has two children who attend Cherokee Charter Academy.

Kyla Cromer and Channing Ruskell requested the recounts of the Post 1 school board and Post 2 county commission races.
The recounts of the Post 1 school board and Post 2 county commission races are done, and the results stand. Kelly Marlow, former Cherokee County Fire Chief Ray Gunnin and Commissioner Jim Hubbard remained at the top of the pack of their respective races. Kyla Cromer, who lost the Cherokee County Board of Education contest against Marlow by 24 votes, and Channing Ruskell, who finished last in his three-way race with Hubbard and Gunnin, requested the recounts. Votes will be recounted at 2 p.m. Thursday at the county elections office in Canton.
There will be recounts Thursday of the Post 1 school board and Post 2 county commission races. Kyla Cromer, who lost the Cherokee County Board of Education contest against Kelly Marlow by 24 votes, and Channing Ruskell, who finished last in his three-way race with Commissioner Jim Hubbard and former Cherokee County Fire Chief Ray Gunnin, requested the recounts. Gunnin received 21 more votes than Ruskell, enough to keep his campaign alive for a runoff with Hubbard. The recounts will begin at 2 p.m. at the Cherokee County Elections and Voter Registration Office and continue "until completion," said Janet Munda, the county's elections supervisor.
