TSPLOST and the chance to help shape the Cherokee County Board of Education compelled these residents to vote in today's general primary.
A controversial transportation referendum and a number of competitive local races drove early voters to the polls in high numbers. And based on interivews with some residents, that's what drove voters to precincts across Cherokee today for the general primary. Defeating TSPLOST brought 77-year-old Harrison Williams to the polls at Grace Church in Canton. "That's a tax that I will have to pay and never see," he said. "If anybody 65 and over is voting for it, they might never see it." Over at Canton's Sixes Elementary, 50-year-old Renea McGill voted against the controversial transportation sales tax. Danny Dukes said he will eliminate all teacher furloughs. Monday night, he was asked how he would do that.
When he announced his run for county school board chair, Danny Dukes pledged to eliminate all teacher furloughs by reducing a "bloated" central office. During Monday night's debate at the Cherokee County Republican Party headquarters in Towne Lake, he was asked how he would do that. This year, the Cherokee County School District has proposed eight furlough days, a move that is expected to save a total of about $8.8 million during the 2012-13 school year. She said she wants to extend Cherokee Academies to the middle and high school level.
Janet Read, current Board of Education Post 4 member, will be running for board chair in the next election, Read said in a release. "I think my seven plus years as a board member, and especially my previous chair and vice-chair experience will be an asset to me as the first county-wide elected chair," Read said. "In the past ten years we have seen many successes as a school district. I have been honored to be a part of many of those successes and would be honored to continue as the leader of the school board of such an outstanding school system."
