It's that time of year to buy Girl Scout cookies!
As a former Girl Scout, there are a few important things to know: the Girl Scout Promise and Girl Scout Law by heart, all the songs you sing at camps down cold and the perfect speech for selling Girl Scout cookies in your town. I still know the Girl Scout Law, I haven’t forgotten the lyrics (and accompanying dance steps) to “Make New Friends," and I’ll always remember ringing the neighbor’s doorbells with my Brownie sash on, ready to recite why they needed at least 20 boxes of Thin Mints. Girl Scout Cookie Season is now upon us, which means that you now have the chance to buy 20 boxes of Thin Mints, if you so desire (which I’m sure you do). So, where can you buy Girl Scout cookies in Holly Springs? You have a few options: According to the …

Girl Scouts begin taking cookie orders Friday, and cookie booths will open on Feb. 7.
Been craving Thin Mints, Samoas or Tagalongs? There's an app for that! Yesterday the 42,000 girls of the 3,500 troops of the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta began taking cookie orders, but this year they have new tools to push the cookies that fund their programs through what the organization describes as a hands-on financial literacy program. So you won't miss an opportunity to buy Trefoils, Do-si-dos or the new Savannah Smiles, a tart lemon flavor cookie, the scouts have unveiled the Girl Scout Cookie locator app for iPhone and Android. This year, the girls also will be armed with mobile credit card machines. When cookie booths open Feb. 7, you can find Holly Springs and other locations using your phone's GPS capabilities or searching by …

This year, Girl Scout Troop 10428 out of Holly Springs-Hickory Flat, will be joining in the Gift of Caring Program with the American Legion. These kindergarten and first grade girls will be taking donations for those who wish to donate boxes of cookies to be sent to troops overseas. Their goal is to have 500 boxes sent this year. Any patron will have the chance to donate cookies to the Gift of Caring Program at any of the outdoor cookies sales locations. They will be kicking off the project Saturday at the Kroger on Hickory Flat Highway and the Family Traditions on Hickory Flat Highway from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Today's a big day for Georgia's Girl Scouts, with the international organization honored by Gov. Nathan Deal and the General Assembly as it kicks off the countdown to its 100th anniversary in 2012. For more than 41,000 girls in 34 greater Atlanta counties, however, the day holds another special significance: It's time to get ready for the annual tradition of cookie booth sales at hundreds of locations, including shopping centers and offices. While the "official" booth sales begin Friday, the Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta will unveil a Cookie Coach today to spread the word about the sales. And, in this digital age, the Girl Scouts have created a site to let cookie buyers find the nearest booth: cookielocator.littlebrownie.com. Holly …

You read it on Patch, so this must be true. Sort of.
I’m a firm believer that there are some times when calories cease to exist: mission trips, sick days, that first afternoon when Girl Scout Cookies are delivered and snow days. Some people buy bread and milk. I buy chocolate and Diet Coke. So this column is to announce that, as far as I know, calories do not count on days when roads are frozen over. First of all, you have to burn at least 300 calories building that snowman. You probably sweat off another 150 in those minutes between bundling up and heading out into the cold. I’d estimate that you get rid of another 50 from getting up once you fall on the ice and another 100 for climbing up that hill after you decide to sled down once. Hot chocolate is 90 percent water, so that can’t hurt …
