The Creekview girls and boys and the Sequoyah boys will open the Georgia High School Association basketball playoffs at the end of the week. The Creekview girls, who won Region 7-AAAA with a 75-56 win over Rome on Saturday night, will open the AAAA state tournament at home Friday against Region 8-AAAA's fourth seed, Clarke Central. The Lady Grizzlies made 22 of 28 free throws and caused 25 turnovers in the region championship, the Rome News-Tribune reported. If the Lady Grizzlies win again Friday, they'll play at home against the Osborne-Southwest DeKalb winner the following Tuesday. A matchup of two of the top three boys basketball teams in AAAAA highlights the high school sports schedule this weekend. Depending on whether you favor the Georgia Prep Country/Georgia Athletic Coaches Association poll or the Score Atlanta standings, Wheeler and Shiloh are either Nos. 1 and 2 or 2 and 3 in AAAAA right now. We'll see which team is more deserving of the high ranking and is a stronger threat to the other team in the top three, Milton, when they play at Wheeler at 6 p.m. Saturday. Holiday basketball also gets underway this weekend with the three-day Longhorn Shootout at Kell, including Kennesaw Mountain, Lassiter, Woodstock, Dunwoody, North Atlanta and Mundy's Mill. Basketball grabs the spotlight Friday night and Saturday, leading up to the highlight of the weekend, Walton's bid for the first Cobb County state football championship since 1967. Saturday's court action includes four games at Allatoona High in the Coaches vs. Cancer breast cancer awareness event. Sequoyah and Creekview will be together in the 11-team Region 7-AAAAA the next two years under the realignment setup the Georgia High School Association announced Tuesday. The new region is part of the GHSA’s move from five classifications to six. A primary reason for the GHSA's change is to cut travel time, the association says on its website. “The Reclassification Committee continued to emphasize that viewpoint by establishing sub-regions in nearly every region.” It will be up to the principals of the high schools in each region to decide whether to compete based on those subregions or to play schedules across the full region. Either way, neighboring Creekview and Sequoyah will see a lot of each other in the second-highest GHSA class. …
