BridgeMill Beating Fugitive Arrested in Florida

Karen Lynn King was wanted for allegedly beating her ex-boyfriend and stuffing him in the trunk of his own car.

A Cherokee County woman who was wanted for allegedly beating her ex-boyfriend has been arrested in Florida after being on the run since early 2012. Karen Lynn King was described as the "last suspect" in the March, 2012 assault on Lyndon Baines Smith. Smith was allegedly beaten, stuffed into the trunk of his own car, and driven from the BridgeMill subdivision to Alabama. Previous to investigators focusing their investigation on finding King, five other suspects, including Smith's sons, were arrested and charged with the assault. According to a Cherokee Sheriff's Office release, King was arrested in Indian River County, Florida on April 6 at 10:30 p.m. At the time of her arrest, King was at her boyfriend's home. Cherokee Sheriff's Office Needs Help Locating Missing Man

James Michael Brown was last seen on Monday at an apartment complex in southwest Cherokee County.

The Cherokee Sheriff's Office needs the public to help the agency locate a missing man.  James Michael Brown was last seen at the Gregory Lane Apartments on Monday. The apartment complex is located off Bells Ferry Road just south of Highway 92 in the southwest sector of the county. Brown is described as a 32-year-old black male, 6'2 feet tall and weighs around 175 pounds. He has short curly black hair and is believed to have no facial hair.  He may be traveling in a red 2002 Toyota Solara with Georgia license plate that reads PCB-2204.  Anyone with information is asked to call the Cherokee Sheriff's Office at (770) 928-0239.

'Guns & Hoses' Raises Over $2,000 for CASA Cherokee

Runners participating in the annual Guns & Hoses 5K raised money for the child advocacy organization.

Over 500 runners participated in the annual Guns & Hoses 5K, which brought in over $2,000 for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Cherokee. According to Neely Motiejunas, recreation division director with Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency, 243 runners signed up to support Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and another 271 signed up to support the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.  Their efforts garnered CASA Cherokee $2,680. Both public safety agencies solicited runners to participate in the race, which was held last Saturday at Hobgood Park. The race was sponsored by the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency.   The fire department and sheriff’s office this year chose to donate the proceeds from the race to CASA Cherokee. The …

Cherokee Commission To Review Financials, Possible Sign Ordinance Changes

The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will discuss possibly making changes to its sign ordinance during its work session today.

The Cherokee County Commission will discuss its sign ordinance and first quarter 2013 financials during its meeting today. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m., following its 3 p.m. work session. The meeting will be held on the bottom level of the county administration building. Along with the sign ordinance amendment discussions, the commission will also hear from Cherokee County District Attorney Shannon Wallace, who will discuss her office with the commission.  Commissioners will also review first quarter financials during the work session. Towne Lake Man Dies After Cherokee SWAT Standoff

A man involved in a SWAT standoff in Towne Lake Hills West died from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

What started out as a SWAT standoff has ended tragically in an upscale Towne Lake neighborhood.  A man who barricaded himself inside a home at 351 Iron Hill Trace was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Cherokee Sheriff's Office's Lt. Jamie Gianfala said Sunday evening.   Cherokee sheriff's deputies were called to a home in Towne Lake Hills West off Towne Lake Parkway around 2:30 p.m. Sunday from the female homeowner requesting domestic standby so she can go inside the home and retrieve some of her belongings.  Lt. Jamie Gianfala, acting spokesperson for the sheriff's office, said the woman, not wanting to escalate the situation, asked the deputy to wait outside the home while she went inside. Cherokee Sheriff's Office Recognizes Promoted Deputies

Twelve deputies were recently promoted and were publicly recognized on Tuesday.

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison on Tuesday publicly acknowledged twelve deputies who were recently promoted. The deputies were recognized during the Cherokee County Commission meeting on Feb. 5.  Garrison pinned the employees' new collar brass while the commissioners, citizens and families of the employees watched from the audience. Those who were recently promoted were: Capt. Tommy Pinyan, Capt. Bill Smith, Lt. John New, Lt. Mark Anderson, Sgt. Joseph Pelletier, Sgt. David Barone, Sgt. Casey McLeod, Sgt. Kim Brown, Cpl. Lee Stewart, Cpl. Derrick Voss, Cpl. Steven Prescott and Cpl. Garrett Carter.

More runners needed for 'Guns & Hoses' Charity Run

The annual Guns & Hoses 5K will be held Feb. 16.

The Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency would like to see more participants in its seventh annual Guns & Hoses 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run. The agency, which is teaming up with the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and the Cherokee Sheriff’s Office for the event, had 650 runners last year and hope to reach 700 to participate during the event on Saturday Feb. 16.  CRPA currently has 234 runners signed up for the sheriff's office and 187 signed up for the fire department, said Neely Montejunas, recreation division director with the agency.  The race will be held at Hobgood Park in Towne Lake. Participants can choose which team — guns for the sheriff's office or hoses for the fire department — and the $5 of the total registration fee …

Suspect Leads Officers On Chase, Crashes into Woodstock Police Vehicle

A routine traffic stop early Sunday morning morphed into a short vehicle pursuit through two jurisdictions and ended with the suspect crashing into a Woodstock police vehicle.

A routine traffic stop earlier this week turned into a police chase that ended with the suspect crashing into a Woodstock police vehicle. Wasim Ibn-Darriel Abdul Majeed, 24, of Roswell was arrested on Sunday and charged by the Cherokee Sheriff's Office with failure to maintain lane, speeding, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, driving while unlicensed, theft by receiving a stolen vehicle and running a red light. He remains at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center with a $78,500 bond.  Cherokee Sheriff's Office deputies tried to pull Majeed over around 1 a.m. Sunday Jan. 27 after he was observed failing to maintain the lane he was driving in, said Spokesman Lt. Cherokee Sheriff's Deputies Seek Help in Solving Two Burglary Attempts

Two separate burglaries occurred early Thursday morning, both of which involve an early 1990s model white Ford van.

The Cherokee Sheriff’s Office needs the public's help in finding who is behind two attempted burglary incidents that happened early Thursday morning.  At around 4:30 a.m., a van backed up to the Hobgood Chevron at the corner of Bells Ferry Road and Towne Lake Parkway. According to a Cherokee Sheriff's Office press release, a male exited the vehicle and broke the glass window next to the ATM machine inside the store. The suspect allegedly attached at strap to the ATM machine and drove away. However, the strap broke, and neither the suspect nor the van returned to the location. Nothing was taken from the property or from inside the store.  The suspect then allegedly drove directly to the Sweetwater Quickstop convenience store on Knox Bridge …
