Cherokee County Promotes Six Firefighters

The ceremony was held recently in Canton.

Six Cherokee County firefighters were promoted during ceremonies at the Cherokee County Administrative Offices located at The Bluffs in Canton. Those promoted were: Erdely, came to work for the fire department 18 years ago and was promoted to the rank of sergeant in September 1998 and promoted to lieutenant in November 2001. After being promoted to captain in 2003, Erdley went on to become a battalion chief in 2005. Hughes has worked for Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services for 25 years.  In 1996, Hughes received his first promotion to sergeant. Three years later, he was promoted to lieutenant and in 2003 he became a captain. Gibbs has been with the department since 1999 and was promoted to sergeant two years later. He became a …

12 Firefighters Join Cherokee County

The new firefighters were officially sworn into duty last week with Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services officially has 12 new firefighters joining its ranks. Twelve new recruits graduated fom frefighter recruit school last week at Cherokee High School in Canton. The keynote speaker for the evening was retired Atlanta Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Dan Diehl.  Several recruits receive special awards that were doled out during the ceremony: Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather, Assistant Fire Chief Eddie Robinson and Field Operations Chief Greg Erdely congratulated the new recruits and welcomed them to Cherokee County.  Those recruits receiving certificates were: Danyell Chalk, Tyler Coker, Bradley Dobbins, Blake Gilder, Matthew Knowles, Peter Lenas, Shane Ramey, Shannon Roberts, Stefan St. Peter, …

Funeral on Sunday For Teen Who Drowned in Canton Reservoir

Jon Bettis will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.

The teenager who drowned earlier this week while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir will be laid to rest on Sunday. Funeral services for Jon Thomas Bettis, 17, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the South Canton Funeral Home Chapel. Bettis will be buried at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery following the services. The family will continue to receive friends and condolences today between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. at South Canton.  Bettis drowned on Wednesday while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton, which opened to the public in March. Bettis' autopsy will be conducted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Medical Examiner's Office. UPDATE: Patient Ejected From Ambulance In I-575 Accident

A patient being transported in an AmeriMed ambulance was injured in an roll-over accident on I-575 near Exit 16 in Canton.

Editor's note (10 a.m.): the story has been updated to correct information provided to Patch. A patient and two medics riding in an AmeriMed Emergency Medical Servicesambulance was injured in an accident early Sunday morning in Canton. According to a Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services press release, dispatchers received a call around 2 a.m. Sunday from the driver of the ambulance notifying them of the accident, which occurred along Interstate 575 near Georgia Highway 140 at Exit 16.  Cherokee County fire responded to the accident shortly after the call and found the patient had been ejected from the back of the ambulance.  The ambulance was traveling on the northbound side of the interstate when the it allegedly left the roadway …

American Legion Post Honors Cherokee Public Safety Employees

American Legion Post 45 in Canton recognized those who put their lives on the line for Cherokee County residents.

Several Cherokee County public safety employees were recognized for their dedication by Canton-based American Legion Post 45. The organization honored officials with the Cherokee Sheriff's Office and the Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services during its annual Community Service Awards banquet earlier this week. Cherokee Sheriff, Fire Chief Donate To Child Advocacy Organization

Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison and Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather recently presented a check totaling over $2,000 to CASA Cherokee.

Cherokee County's two public safety agencies have come together to help less fortunate children in the community.  Cherokee County Sheriff Roger Garrison and Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Chief Tim Prather presented Court Appointed Special Advocates, or CASA, Cherokee with a check totaling $2,680 on Thursday.  The money was raised by the Cherokee Parks and Recreation through its annual Guns and Hoses 5K, which was held in February. CASA is an organization made up of community volunteers who advocate for the best interests of children who are placed in foster care due to abuse or neglect. These volunteers ensure that the safety and well-being children are promoted in juvenile court child protection proceedings. They advocate …

Car Lands Upside Down on Highway 372

A young woman managed to crawl away from the wreckage but is not believed to have serious injuries.

A woman has been taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta after extricating herself from a car that landed upside down on Highway 372 in Ball Ground. According to a Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services release, a Honda left the highway near Flat Bottom Trail just before 6 p.m. Sunday and became airborne. When the car came back to Earth, it landed on its roof, possibly trapping anyone inside. The 911 caller that notified Cherokee Fire and Emergency Services was afraid someone may have been trapped inside the wreckage, but rescue crews only discovered an 18-year-old woman who managed to crawl out of the car, sustaining minor injuries. She was taken to the hospital for evaluation. Both lanes of Highway 372 were shut down while …

'Guns & Hoses' Raises Over $2,000 for CASA Cherokee

Runners participating in the annual Guns & Hoses 5K raised money for the child advocacy organization.

Over 500 runners participated in the annual Guns & Hoses 5K, which brought in over $2,000 for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) Cherokee. According to Neely Motiejunas, recreation division director with Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency, 243 runners signed up to support Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services and another 271 signed up to support the Cherokee Sheriff's Office.  Their efforts garnered CASA Cherokee $2,680. Both public safety agencies solicited runners to participate in the race, which was held last Saturday at Hobgood Park. The race was sponsored by the Cherokee Recreation and Parks Agency.   The fire department and sheriff’s office this year chose to donate the proceeds from the race to CASA Cherokee. The …
