Painter Monopolizes New Market
One Cherokee County painter has taken on a new hobby, outhouse-building, and is testing out the market from the front of his East Cherokee Drive home.
Hickory Flat resident Jason Parks has a monopoly on one industry. Although the painter said carpentry was just a part-time hobby, the two wooden outhouses in his front lawn show that his hobby might just turn into a career. The 37-year-old started making outhouses a few months ago. The first, made from wooden palettes, was just an experiment, Parks said. The second outhouse, a poplar and pine structure that took a month to build, is up for sale for $200. "They can be whatever you want them to be," Parks said. "They can be functional or decoration, but they don't have a hole in them now." Parks got the idea when he was in Cleveland, TN, and saw several outhouses used for decoration in mountainous regions.
