Jon Bettis will be laid to rest on Sunday at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery.
The teenager who drowned earlier this week while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir will be laid to rest on Sunday. Funeral services for Jon Thomas Bettis, 17, will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday at the South Canton Funeral Home Chapel. Bettis will be buried at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery following the services. The family will continue to receive friends and condolences today between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. at South Canton. Bettis drowned on Wednesday while swimming in the Hickory Log Creek Reservoir in Canton, which opened to the public in March. This woman is suspected of identity fraud and forgery.
The Canton Police Department is seeking the public's help to identify a suspect in a case of identity fraud and forgery. The woman is believed to be driving an older model black Nissan Pathfinder with aftermarket tires and wheels. The suspect also appears to have a tattoo of a cherry below her right ear. Authorities have ruled out foul play in the death.
The Canton Police Department has identified the young man whose body was discovered behind the Canton Marketplace Sunday morning. In a press release, the department named 19-year-old Sergio Oliverio Padron as the person located in a wooded area by hunters at roughly 9:30 a.m. on Sunday. Police have ruled out foul play in Padron's death, according to the same release. Authorities said that the death was initially labeled as suspicious due to Padron not carrying any form of identification or being listed as a missing person. The Canton Police Department is turning to the public to help identify the man whose body was found behind the Canton Marketplace on Sunday morning. The man is being described as a 20-30 year old Hispanic, standing at 5'6" and weighing 150 to 160 lbs. He has brown eyes and black hair and has no scars or tattoos. He was discovered wearing blue jeans, a gray button down shirt and a gray and black Aeropostale brand fleece jacket. He was also wearing black Sperry Topsider shoes, black Joe Boxer socks and gray Calvin Klein boxer briefs. Anyone who knows the identity of this man is urged to contact the police by calling 911 or (770) 720-4883.

A year ago today, the body of Jorelys Rivera was found in a dumpster at her River Ridge apartment complex after she was abducted, sexually assaulted and stabbed by maintenance man Ryan Brunn three days prior. The handling of the case by the Canton Police Department was seen as an organizational failure, starting with the lax attitude of the department from the top down in their efforts to find the girl. The Optimist Club of Laurel Canyon donated money towards the department's Shop with a Cop.
The Canton Police Department recently received a $500 donation towards its Explorer Post. The department received the donation last week from the Optimist Club of Laurel Canyon after Police Chief Robert Merchant spoke to the club on Nov. 12. The money will be used for the department's Shop with a Cop program, which takes less fortunate children Christmas shopping to purchase presents for themselves or for their family members. Shop with a Cop is typically held in December. Chief Merchant told the audience he was "very appreciative of the donation," according to a press release from the department. The Optimist Club of Laurel Canyon has consistently supported the police department's initiative.

The Canton Police Department is crediting tips from the public for identifying the suspect.
Tips from the public allowed the Canton Police Department to catch one of three shoplifters who have been active at the Target in Canton. Police Lt. G. Alan Rivas said in a press release that multiple tips from the public identified the suspect as 19-year-old Jacob Corey Kelcourse of Canton. Kelcourse was charged with four counts of misdemeanor shoplifting and turned himself in to authorities last Friday. He was held in the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center and released on $1,000 bond.
