Sequoyah made the long trip to NW Whitfield in need of a strong start in a tough environment. They got off to the start they needed going 7-10 from the floor and a 17-10 advantage after one period of play NW Whitfield went on a 5-0 run to start the second quarter and had the No. 2 ranked Chiefs on their heels a little bit. A transition dunk by Brandon Alexander steadied the ship somewhat and both teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first half, leaving the floor with the score 33-27 in favor of Sequoyah. In the first matchup between these two clubs, the Bruins trailed by 22 at halftime. With the lead still within reach, the Bruins came out fired up and managed to cut the lead 2 points at 45-43 heading into the fourth quarter. …

The boys basketball head coach at Sequoyah talks to Patch.
Patch: How do you feel about the size of the region this year? Jeremy Adams: It’s unique. Last year we came from a 15-team region, so this is the second straight year we’ve been in a bigger region. It’s made for some interesting matchups with different style teams. That’s always tough to react to. Patch: How do you feel about the number of region games before tournament play? JA: It’s something we voted on as coaches. We just felt like we wanted to make sure at the end of the year we had the best seating possible. We figured the best way to see who the top teams were before the tournament so those teams would have the best opportunity advance to the state tournament. Coming off a 10 day layoff with no practice due to weather, the Sequoyah Chiefs had to shake off the rust to keep their unbeaten season intact. It took a solid defensive effort from the senior-led team to provide several transition baskets to get things going for Sequoyah. Although no one really expected much resistance from the Eagles, there was still little room for mistakes after a shaky performance at Johns Creek in the Chiefs last outing. Using a trapping defense, the Chiefs forced 21 turnovers on the night, scoring 50 points directly related to turnovers by South Forsyth. Perhaps GHSA should have consulted you and your infinite wisdom when assigning the regions last year. I am guessing that with all the hate, Sequoyah beats your kids team as well? That would explain a lot.   more ›
