New Travel Team Offers Financial Aid

The Cherokee Cats will help those who can't afford the traditional costs of a travel team.

The rising costs of little league baseball have been noted around the country. Now, local kids will have additional financial aid if they want to play for the CATS. The CATS will be a 9u or 10u travel baseball team that requires parents to pay what the typical recreational program costs. The parents of players must have a financial need for support to be eligible for the team, according to a press release. Coaches Jim Thomas and Darrell Campbell, both of Hickory Flat, have a sincere desire to help young athletes in Cherokee County that have the desire to further develop their baseball skills to hopefully play at a higher level, the release said. "Unfortunately, today it is nearly impossible for a player to make their high school team …

'Parents Are the Ultimate Local Control'

Gov. Nathan Deal signed House Bill 797 at Cherokee Charter Academy in Canton, where he was awarded the 2012 Champion for Charters Award from a national charter schools group.

With Cherokee Charter Academy students flanking him, Gov. Nathan Deal this morning signed a bill that he said will provide Georgia families with choices when it comes to public education. "We have every confidence to believe that Georgians all across this state embrace the idea that parents should have more options and that parents should be more involved in the process of the education of their children," he said moments before he signed House Bill 797, which will restore the state charter schools commission if voters approve a corresponding constitutional amendment in November. "Charter schools are, in my opinion, a key ingredient in the future educational success for the state of Georgia. We know that when you promote competition, …

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

Welcome to the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues" looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly priced equipment for …

Athletes are nominated by their athletic director or coach based on their ability to display strong leadership and community engagement skills, and demonstrate competence, confidence, connections and courage to flourish on the court, in the classroom and in life, according to a CCSD news release. Mark Teixeira Named Patch Baseball Commissioner

The New York Yankee and four-time Gold Glove winner will oversee little league and other baseball content.

Former Atlanta Brave and Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Mark Teixeira will be offering words of advice on sports and healthy eating to young athletes as Patch's new Commissioner of Baseball. “I live in a Patch town now and I keep tabs on my original hometown via the Patch site there, so I’ve seen the ways that Patch supports its communities,”  Teixeira said. “I’m excited to be a part of that by connecting with Patch users who have the same passion for baseball that I do. I’m eager to see what kinds of questions they toss my way!” As little leagues gear up for the season, Teixeira will be regularly engaging with users on Patch sites. “Baseball is such an important part of so many of the communities we’re in - and if something’s important to our…
