Are You Ready for Super Moon 2012?

Check out the night skies Saturday evening for a special glimpse at the moon.

Break out your telescopes: Saturday night brings us Super Moon 2012.  A Super Moon occurs when the moon goes into its full phase at the same time it approaches Earth at the shortest-possible point in its orbit—an event known as a perigee. If you're like me—someone who enjoys watching the Discovery Channel—you'll click through this NASA video that will teach you all about Super Moon 2012.  To sum it up, the Moon is supposed to look big Saturday night. And it's going to be really cool.  It will orbit within 221,802 miles of Planet Earth—not exactly close enough to reach out and touch, but the closest it gets to us all year. At 11:34 p.m., the moon will arrive at the position in its annual orbit where it's nearest to Earth. A minute later, it…

Eagles Rock Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre

The rock legends open a successful two-concert visit to Alpharetta four years after they helped open the venue.

The Eagles opened Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre in May 2008 as the first rock act on the stage. On Wednesday, May 2 they returned in the venue's fifth season. The Eagles have been around 35 more years than the amphitheater, and their 40 years performing was a topic for the band members the few times they spoke. Had the house lights been turned on, they would have realized that most of the crowd actually was born more than 40 years ago. So many of us were sporting white hair–and it wasn't a fashion statement. Ticketmaster lists the Friday, May 4 Eagles concert at Verizon as sold out, but ticket resellers do have tickets, such as the 68 listed on StubHub this morning. "It's hard to believe that it is 40 years ago this spring that our music …

Speak Out: More Efforts to Capture Kony?

Officials recently said capturing the alleged war lord is harder than they people think.

After gaining international attention through a 30-minute Youtube video, Joseph Kony, leader of the Lord's Resistance Army, is still loose in Africa. Although Americans are pressuring lawmakers and officials to capture Kony, those only familiar with the video might be underestimating what it takes. Obama administration officials told a Senate subcommittee that efforts to capture Kony are complicated by inhospitable terrain and communication breaks between coordinating countries, according to a CNN report. Right now there are 100 special forces advisers are hunting for Kony, the report said.

I'm moving this blog post over from the Facebook page. Someone who lived for a while in Uganda posted it. "The focus in Northern Uganda should no longer be Joseph Kony the man that oppressed us for 23 years, but it should be on we that were oppressed. I believe that this Acholi problem needs a biblical and African solution of restoring the broken hearted. We urgently need to raise leaders that …   more ›

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

Welcome to the era of the $250 baseball bat.

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues" looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly priced equipment for …

Speak Out: Handcuffing Unruly Kids

Is there any excuse to calm a tantrum with police handcuffs?

A Milledgeville girl was handcuffed after throwing a fit in school that knocked over a shelf and injuring the principal, the Chattanooga Times-Free Press reports. The 6-year-old was charged with simple assault and damage to property.
