I lived in Cincinnati, Ohio where a rock and roll radio station, WSAI, sponsored a contest for aRead More trip to Atlanta to see the Beatles. In those days milk came in a milk bottle and was delivered by the milk man. To enter the contest you wrote your name and address on the milk bottle cap and mailed it to the station. Out of thousands of milk bottle caps, mine was chosen and I was off to Atlanta with 29 other local fans and the famous WSAI DJ Dusty Rhodes. I had never flown before, nor had I ever been on any kind of a trip without my parents. I was scared to death. Being kind of a nerd, I had no idea what people wore to concerts or how hot it is in Atlanta in August. I was all gussied up in a green corduroy suit. Wrong choice all around! The plane ride was exciting. We kept the other passengers entertained by singing Beatles songs. There was a lot of waiting around when we got to Atlanta, but you could feel the excitement build. Finally we were ushered into our seats and announced as the bottle cap winners from WSAI. Fans were screaming even before the Beatle's limo arrived on the ball field where the stage was set up. The Beatles emerged and the uproar was contagious. I had been raised to be demure, but no longer. I was screaming along with the rest. The noise was so loud you could hardly hear the show. Hearing them really didn't matter. They were close enough that you could see the color of their eyes. Fabulous! We returned to Cincinnati immediately after the concert with a copy of the "I Want to Hold your Hand" album and a pre-release album of "Hard Days Night". One of the highlights of my life for sure!
