Spurrier Slams Swinney During Lattimore Celebration

Was the injured player's birthday the right time to bring up a rivalry?

Steve Spurrier knows his audience. In speaking to thousands of USC students Monday afternoon, Spurrier launched into a series of back-handed compliments and outright insults at Clemson's head coach, Dabo Swinney.

It started innocently enough: Swinney had spoken out about how highly he thought of Marcus Lattimore. Since the ceremony was in honor of Lattimore's birthday and recovery, Spurrier discussed the public figures who had wished him well.

Although he never named Swinney, he alluded to Clemson in a way that the students clearly understood (as judged from the cheers.)

"That school that used to beat us a lot and doesn't beat us much anymore," Spurrier said. "Usually when that coach talks about South Carolina, it's a bunch of garbage."

TigerIllustrated.com reported that Swinney issued a statement after being informed of Spurrier's comments through the university's sports information department.

"Even on what should be a really special day, I would think, taking off-color comments ... I really don't have a comment other than I'm embarrassed for him," Swinney said.

Patch asks: Was Marcus Lattimore's ceremony the proper time to bring up this rivalry? Did Spurrier cross a line?

Never won anything? 2 national champ in baseball. Runner up last year. East division SEC champs 2 years ago. ACC champs last year. State champs last 3 years. I agree it's not a rich history. What chicken curse? That has been expelled. I'm pretty sure the author of this one sided article is looking for any attention they can muster. Guess it worked. I watched the interview and while it wasn't the best time and place, it was a student event for prob the most popular athlete for the state in our lifetime. At least the most polarizing. It's a "dig". That's all it was. Spurrier has done this his whole career. Nobody should be surprised. Quit getting your feelings hurt. Want to get him back? Beat him.

We're clearly talking football here, not baseball. Division championships don't count.

When you have a history as scant as ours you use all. But even you can see the culture changing. The college football arena sees USC as a rising program. High school players go to USC for the chance to play big time football for a big time coach for the best conference in the country. When a coaching, and player, legend expresses interest. You listen. Not too hard to understand.

I am a Clemson Fan and I bleed Orange and Purple! Lattimore is an awesome athlete and I pray for his speedy recovery. USC just wont be the same without him. Spurrier was out of line calling out the Tigers coach saying it was garbage wishing Lattimore well! Thats good sportsmanship on Dabo's part! Spurrier should grow up and see that! Somethings are more important that bashing Clemson all the time! GET WELL SOON MARCUS!!!! TIGER NATION LOVES YOU!!!!!

It's time to stop the bickering and remember what the day was for -- to wish Marcus Lattimore a Happy Birthday. He is bigger than all this nit-picking over words that have nothing to do about Marcus. Marcus is probably the most loved and respected USC player on campus that most people remember in the past decades. I still remember watching Steve Wadiak run that football and crying as I saw him in his coffin after the car wreck. He also was a very loved athlete. I am thankful that we still have Marcus and that he tells us that he will be back.
