The leisurely fun–filled days of summer are over and your child may not be excited about getting back to school-work. Reid Trego, director of  of Woodstock offers you tips to help you start the school year off right.

  2. Set a structured, consistent homework time.  With extra-curricular activities kicking into high gear, our children get busy.  Schedule consistent homework time each night of the week, so that yur child knows that schoolwork is a priority.
  3. Plan on getting extra help. Was last year a struggle? Prevent it this year. Find supplemental education services for your child. Talk to his or her teacher in advance about problem areas and how the two of you can work together to get your child off on the right foot.  First Progress Reports go home August 30.  Address concerns early.  Problems don't fix themselves.
  4. Set an optimistic tone. You can imagine how much influence you have. Show him or her through your actions that learning is fun and a part of everyday life. Teach your child to value effort and hard work. Even failure can be good! What matters is how we learn from it and move forward.
  5. Be a good listener.  Your child will probably have stories about their school day.  Whether the stories are related to academics or their friends, listen.  That way your child will know that you are the best support system he has.
