Run to Remember: 5K for Cancer Awareness

Patch talked to Danielle Chimenti, a Sequoyah senior, about her upcoming race on March 5 at 8 a.m. at Boling Park in Canton.

Patch: Why did you pick this for your senior project?

DC:I chose to host a 5k for my senior project because running is a huge part of my life. I have been a member of the Sequoyah Youth Track Team for eight years, the high school varsity team for four years, and the varsity cross-country team for two years.

Patch: Do you have special ties to someone with cancer?

DC: Yes, I am doing this run in memory of one of my youth track coaches. He was diagnosed with a very rare cancer that less than 2 percent of all cancer patients have called adenocarcinoma of the small bowel. I wanted to bring awareness to this type of cancer and other rare cancers. Also, cancer runs in my family and I thought this was a good way to honor their memory.

Patch: How many people are registered?

DC: As of right now, I have 108 people registered.

Patch: How many are you expecting?

DC: I am hoping to have 150 or more people.

Patch: Are there any goals you're trying to meet?

DC: I am trying to raise at least $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Patch: Do you run?

DC: Yes, I run all the time. I chose to do a 5k because it is something where people of all ages can participate in and they are very fun.

Patch: What should people know before coming to the race?

People should watch the weather and come prepared with an umbrella! Also, I will be selling "In Memory Of" ribbons from the American Cancer Society for anyone who would like to purchase one for $2.  You can sign up online until race day. Online donations can also be made at the same link.
