Kristen Bennett: The Cake Boss at Sequoyah High

One senior prepares for her future one pastry at a time.

It’s the centerpiece at any wedding reception, the staple at kids’ birthday parties, and the main focus of Buddy Valastro’s hit television show Cake Boss.

That’s correct: Americans are in love with cake.  So it’s finally time to let them eat cake—at least that’s what Kristen Bennett thought when she was deciding what to do for her senior project at

Bennett chose to take cake decorating classes as her senior project over the summer.  Her cake decorating classes were held at the Michaels in Riverstone and cost one $100 for all of the classes that she took.

“I decided to do my project over the summer because I knew I was going to be overwhelmed with three AP classes and an honors class [during the school year],” Bennett said.

Doing the senior project over the summer was a new option added to the “senior project” by Sequoyah this school year of 2010-2011.

Although learning how to decorate cakes may seem like an elementary task, it was quite the contrary for Bennett.  She spent more than on her senior project and had to master many different decorating skills within these cake decorating classes.

“My absolute favorite thing that I learned how to make in my decorating classes would have to be the flowers made out of fondant and gum paste. They end up looking very realistic,” Bennett said.

This senior project may prove to be extremely useful for Bennett later on because she said, “I have always really enjoyed baking, and I have seen numerous cake decorating shows on TV so I decided that I wanted to learn how to make pretty cakes. I think I will use my skills in the future as a hobby and maybe one day I will open up my own cake shop.”

Bennett acknowledged that her senior project was a great choice because overall she said, “I had so much fun learning how to decorate cakes; I found that it is very relaxing.”
