Dems to Hold Charter Hearing

Another version of the amendment, which would have restored the state's power to approve charter schools, failed in the House on Wednesday. Find out how Cherokee reps voted.

House Democrats will hold a public hearing on Wednesday to propose changes to HR 1162 and to promote HR 1335, a constitutional amendment aimed at creating an alternate authorizer for charter schools without damaging Georgia’s public school system.

“HR 1335 puts charter schools squarely in the Constitution, removing any doubt about the state’s support of this educational option,” said Rep. Scott Holcomb (D-Atlanta). “It reaffirms the state’s role in educational policy and limits funding of state-created charter schools to state-provided funds.”

Rep. Simone Bell (D-Atlanta) added, “The House Democratic Caucus believes in educational opportunity and HR 1335 is a resolution that encourages cooperation at the state and local levels to ensure that Georgia’s children receive the best education possible, regardless of the type of school.”

Reps. Bell, Holcomb, Brian Thomas (D-Lilburn), Gloria Frazier (D-Hephzibah) and other members of the Georgia House Democratic Caucus will be available to speak with press afterwards.
