State Review Team Visits Sequoyah, Creekview High Schools

The time spent in the Cherokee County School District was part of a regular 5-year compliance review for Career, Technical and Agricultural programs and facilities .

The Cherokee County School District's Career, Technical and Agricultural (CTAE) programs and facilities are under a regular compliance review by a state team, who visited schools this week.

The State Career, Technical & Agricultural Education Review Team was in the county on Oct. 2, 2012 for a five-year review of the school district’s CTAE programs and facilities. Cherokee High School, Creekview High School, Freedom Middle School and Sequoyah High School were visited by the review team, which was made up of staff from the State Department of Education and from school systems across Georgia. During those visits, they interviewed administrators, teachers, counselors and students, toured facilities and observed classes to assess if the school district is providing students with outstanding CTAE programs.

The reviews covered areas including School District support of CTAE, knowledge of instructors and counselors, quality of equipment and supplies, classroom and lab safety, career awareness and exploratory activities, availability of Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), integration of academics, service to special population students, professional development opportunities and collaboration with business and industry partners.

“Your system really supports CTAE,” Roy Rucks, CTAE North Georgia Regional Coordinator for the GDOE, said during his post-review presentation to School District staff.

A written report will be provided to CCSD later this year.

“You have a great strategic plan for CTAE programs at the system level and school level, and a lot of attention is paid to improvement and goal setting,” Rucks said.

The CTAE Review Team praised individual schools for the quality of their staff, facilities, equipment and technology and the clear administrative support for CTAE programs. Team members also made suggestions as to how to further improve the programs, such as seeking more industry certification opportunities for students and increasing the number of CTSOs like SkillsUSA to give students greater access to additional curriculum and competitions.

“Career readiness has long been an important focus of the Cherokee County School District, and we are continuously reviewing our CTAE programs to ensure the courses and activities we offer will prepare our students for the workforce of today and tomorrow,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Frank R. Petruzielo said. “The School District’s dedication to career, technical and agricultural education will only increase in the future with the advent of the State’s new College and Career Readiness Performance Index and our plans to develop a Technical High School Academy in the current Teasley Middle School facility when we open that school’s new campus.”
