The Cherokee County School Board is expected to approve a process to find a candidate who would serve out the remainder of Kelly Marlow's term in the District 1 seat.

The board will consider a proposed timeline during its meeting tonight, which starts at 7 p.m. at the historic Canton High School/School Board Auditorium. The meeting will be preceded by the board's strategic work session, which gets underway at 6 p.m.

State law calls for the board to hold a special election to fill vacancies when more than a year of a board member's term remains. The term for Kelly Marlow, who resigned on April 30 after she was convicted of felony false statement charges, expires on Dec. 31, 2016.

The board is now tasked with calling a special election to fill the District 1 seat on Nov. 4, which is the next available date. In the meantime, the board would approve a process that calls for the advertisement of the vacancy and for interested residents to submit applications to the school district by 5 p.m. June 5.

That would give the board time to review and vote to make an appointment at its June 19 meeting. The appointment would serve until he or she is replaced by the winner of the Nov. 4 special election.

The application form is attached in .PDF format.

The full agenda for the school board's meeting can be viewed on its website.
