Coordinated by Victoria Brown, who coaches softball, lacrosse and basketball at Etowah High School, the program "recognized the impact of Title IX, the federal law calling for gender equity in athletics in schools and celebrated the successes of the various girls’ sports teams at all of the county high schools this year," according to the school district.

An honored female athlete alumna or coach from each high school shared highlights and scholarships won at each respective high school, and keynote speaker Tosha Sumner shared what she gained from being an athlete.

Sumner, a college track star who will be inducted into Villanova University’s Athletic Hall of Fame later this month, said she learned concepts from competition like teamwork, positive attitude and management skills that she applies in her business career today. She also made lifelong friendships and was able to travel extensively while running as a sponsored athlete.

Roger Nolan, girls’ basketball coach at Creekview High School for the last 10 years, was recognized as Cherokee County’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day Honorary Coach.

He told the athletes in attendance not to worry too much about college scouts.

“If you’re good enough, you are going to get noticed,” he said. “If you love the game enough, then go walk on somewhere and play.”

This year’s school honorees were Sharon Swanson of Cherokee; Whitley Dover of Creekview; Megan Huffman of Etowah; Syretha Marble of River Ridge;, Sydney Yeomans of Sequoyah; and Meagan Biello of Woodstock.
