Avery Students Raise Over $6,000 for Leukemia Society

The school pitted boys against girls to see who could raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Usually, the ages-old battle of the sexes brings nothing but trouble. Thankfully, Avery Elementary School's recent gender clash was for a good cause.

The school challenged its boys and girls to compete against each other to raise the most money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through a Pennies for Patients fundraiser.

Avery's boys and girls were encouraged to bring any spare change they found or were given to school to put in their respective jars. After a long, profitable battle, the entire school managed to raise $6,474.87 for the society.

"The Avery community is an incredibly caring and generous group," Dr. Pam Spencer, principal at Avery Elementary, said. "Our students love being part of initiatives that help and serve others."

Although every student who donated even one penny to the cause deserves recognition, a special nod goes out to fifth grader and Jr. Beta Club member Annabelle Caraballo, who raised over $520 for the society. Caraballo's contributions went a long way to ensuring the girls raised more money than the boys this year.

"We had a great time and our excitement grew each day as more and more pennies were collected," Spencer said. "We are proud and pleased to be able to help those whose struggles are far greater than our own."
