Zenchuk Leads Post 3 Election

Only 829 residents voted in the Holly Springs City Council election today. At 10 p.m., 100 percent of precincts were reported with 65.02 percent of the votes going to Michael Zenchuk.

Michael Zenchuk, the unofficial leader for the Post 3 position is excited to come out on top, but disappointed in the number of votes that got him there.

“I’m never pleased when the turnout is such a small percent of the population,” Zenchuk said in a late interview Tuesday night. “It’s our civic duty to go out on the vote. Probably, more people came out on the Sunday alcohol sales.”

That’s not going to stop him from moving forward, though.

The first matter of business Zenchuk plans to attack is the current candidate requirements for Holly Springs elections.

“You don’t have to show any proof of residency to be able to run, and we don’t need any part-time candidates,” Zenchuk said.

Zenchuk was the only Holly Springs candidate to post signs, and although he said those helped, he said it was the networking he did that pushed him over the top.

“I met with a lot of people and people invited me into their homes to talk,” Zenchuk said.

He said he had emailed with Kevin Bailey who got 17.97 percent of the vote, but hadn’t heard from the other candidate, Andrew Whitaker, who got 14.72 percent of the vote. Post 3 was vacated by when she moved out of the city limits earlier this year.
