Transportation Projects Make First Cut

It's up to the Atlanta Regional Roundtable to decide what from Cherokee's list makes it to the referendum next year.

The Georgia Department of Transportation qualified for a regional 1-cent sales tax under the Transportation Investment Act, plus one extra project, the county Board of Commissioners heard Tuesday.

The total cost of those projects would be about $690 million, board Chairman Buzz Ahrens said. The additional project is in the northern part of the county.

Now the Atlanta Regional Roundtable will narrow the 10-county project list in preparation for a regional referendum to approve the special 10-year sales tax next year, Ahrens said. The full list contains nearly $23 billion worth of projects; the tax is expected to generate $8 billion over a decade.

A research group has been appointed for project selection. Ahrens and Holly Springs Mayor Timothy Downing will have a one-hour teleconference town meeting for anyone who wishes to call in with a question next Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The number to call is 888-886-6603; the PIN is 16719. Check back with Patch for coverage of the call.
