Sixes Road Bridge Project Substantially Complete

While there are some loose ends to tie up, motorists should be able to travel along the improved Sixes Road bridge and ramps to and from I-575.

Motorists who have made Sixes Road at Interstate 575 part of their daily commute can now breathe a sigh of relief.

The Sixes Road bridge widening and enhancement project is largely complete, according to Georgia Department of Transportation officials.

"While some work – concrete median and striping – remains to be done, the good news is that the completion of the paving will render the project complete as far as the traveling public is concerned," said GDOT Spokesman Mohamed Arafa.

Arafa noted the remaining work should "minimally interfere with traffic."

The work includes widening the bridge over the interstate, installing an intersection video detection system and adding more lanes onto the entrance and exit ramps.

Specifically, the bridge will now have two through lanes in each direction, two left-turn lanes onto I-575 southbound and a left-turn lane onto the northbound side of the interstate.

The northbound exit ramp has also been widened to feature two left-hand turns lanes and two right-hand turns.

On the southbound side, the single-lane exit ramp will turn into double lanes at the ramp's junction with Sixes Road, which will allow vehicles to turn either left or right.

The project started in June 2011 and cost just under $8 million.
