Poll: Healthcare Mandate Upheld

Anyone who does not have it by 2014 will pay a penalty on their 2015 taxes.

In a 5-4 decision, the US Supreme Court upheld the healthcare mandate requiring most people to have health insurance by 2014, CBS reports.

The upheld provisions include the individual mandate a provision allowing children to stay on their parents' healthcare until they're 26.

A contributor to the Supreme Court liveblog wrote: The bottom line: the entire ACA is upheld, with the exception that the federal government's power to terminate states' Medicaid funds is narrowly read.

Who voted for what:

Pro: Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and swing-vote Chief Justice John Roberts.

Dissent: Justices Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas and Alito.

I am very happy to hear that the New Health Insurance laws under President Obama were upheld. It is a win for the the US citizens of this country. No more pre-existing conditions and denials. No more rate increases for those that have a disease or illness. It is for us. Thank you President Obama!

The SCOTUS got it wrong. Laugh if you will at the guy writing comments in the Patch, but I know extortion when I see it. On the one hand it's unconstitutional for Congress to force you buy something, or so say a majority of the Judges...okay, I get that. But on the other hand, if you DON'T buy that same something it's okay for Congress to tax you for it. Now go look up extortion...which is essentially demanding money through coercion. This is a very bad precedent to set. Congress will find ways to use this new tax loophole. Think about it. If you don't go buy a car next year that's okay...but we'll levy a tax on you if you don't. Nice going Judge Roberts, you pretty much screwed us all.

Extortion?? What proof do you have of this outrageous claim? As a wise man once said, you ARE ENTITLED your own opinion, but you ARE NOT ENTITLED to your own facts.

Norman - Congress can already set and raise taxes already, as they have for the previous 220-odd years - although this one you only pay if you haven't got health insurance by 2014. Yesterday was a victory for America and Americans and a defeat for Cruelty.

America has long been the laughing stock of the World because it is the only wealthy government without healthcare for all their people... only 3rd world nations don't have universal healthcare for their people... and guess what, even some 3rd world nations DO have it... The republican led Heritage Foundation originally suggested this method of making sure everyone pays.... but now their against it! That makes no sense at all.... Also, RomneyCare has the same payment mandate! But now, the repubs want to get rid of ObamaCare and go back to NO coverage for pre-existing conditions, etc., etc. Why would anyone want all that crap back?
