Planning and Zoning Commission to Consider Backyard Chickens, Zoning Changes

The commission could amend the city's zoning ordinance to allow residents to keep livestock on their property.

The Holly Springs Planning and Zoning Commission will look at the possibility of amending the city's zoning ordinance to allow residents to keep backyard chickens during their Thursday evening meeting.

The commission will consider amending Article 3 of the Holly Springs Zoning Ordinance, which specifies, "permitted accessory uses and regulations with regards to backyard chickens, livestock, etc."

The body may also look to remove Cherokee County's zoning districts from city zoning ordinances.

According to Community Development Director Nancy Moon, the districts were integrated to allow a more streamlined process for the city to annex unincorporated property such as agricultural land.

Moon cited "confusing regulations" as the primary reason why the city may terminate the county zoning districts.

"For example, the city's R-20 zone and the county's R-20 zone are different, which has caused some questions," Moon said.

The public is invited to attend this meeting, which will begin at 6 p.m. at Holly Springs Municipal Court.
