A conditional use permit request from Walmart and adjoining property owners will be considered by both the Holly Springs Planning and Zoning Commission and the Holly Springs City Council in two called meetings tonight.
The commission's called meeting starts at 6 p.m. and the city council's called meeting will begin immediately after its 7 p.m. work session.
Both meetings will be held at the Holly Springs Municipal Court building.
Walmart is seeking a conditional use permit to operate a class III big box retail structure.
"The properties were originally approved for a conditional use permit for a planned shopping center in order to assemble the properties for marketing purposes," said Community Development Director Nancy Moon. "As Walmart has come into the picture, they will have ownership of the Walmart portion of the property and the remaining tract will be in separate ownership."
Moon added Walmart is applying for the stand alone class III Big Box Commercial Retail Structure for "clarification."
"As the properties are still in ownership of the original owners, all property owners had to submit an application," she added.
Walmart plans to build a 180,000-square-feet store and fuel center along Holly Springs Parkway near Interstate 575 at Exit 14.
The store will be located on the west side of Holly Springs Parkway, north of Pinecrest Road, and will be bordered by I-575 on the west.
The site, which is 30 acres, will also contain 30,000 square feet of retail space for businesses and additional stores, according to a press release from the city.
Construction on the space will begin in spring 2013 and the facility could open sometime in 2014. Between 250 and 300 jobs are expected to come to the area.
