Commissioners to Hold Public Hearing on New Millage Rates

The county government wants to hear your thoughts about the proposed reductions at the public hearing this evening.

After publicly declaring their desire to slightly roll back the county's millage rate in light of a more robust property tax digest, the Cherokee County Board of Commissioners will hold a public hearing tonight on its proposed changes to its millage rates.

The hearing will be held during the commission's meeting tonight at 6 p.m. at the Cherokee County Administrative Building in Canton. The meeting will be preceded by a 3 p.m. work session. During the work session, Chief Financial Officer Janelle Funk will outline the 2013 millage rate process to commissioners.

Late last month, the board announced its plans to reduce the millage rate by .06 mills. The bolstered tax base will recoup the losses the county will incur because of the rollback. The healthier tax base will also allow the county to give its employees a three percent cost of living adjustment (COLA).

Below is a breakdown of the roll backs:

  • 5.793 for the general fund (currently 5.825
  • 3.370 for the fire district (currently 3.394)
  • .776 mills for the parks bond (currently .780)

Commissioners are expected to vote on adopting the 2013 millage rates during its meeting on July 16.

Public reaction to the rollback has been mixed, at least on Patch.

"So they are giving me (the homeowner) a discount of about $9.30 cents per year, but the city employees will receive $900 + more per year," wrote John. "Some how that doesn't sound like a good deal for the average citizen who is struggling."

On the other hand, Phil McCall is happy to see the rollback.

"Good news for all property owners," he wrote. "We are glad to see reduction, but even happier to see Fire/EMS/Deputies/Marshals get a COLA."

Please see the attached agenda for Tuesday evening's meeting for more information.
