Commissioners Ease Emergency Relief

Cherokee will contract with two organizations to protect storm-damaged homes in the future.

After a rash of tornadoes several years ago, Cherokee County commissioners are taking steps to provide calm, not chaos, after a storm.

Subdivisions were inundated with residents and volunteers trying to get in to make repairs to their homes after storms in recent years, County Manager Jerry Cooper said at Tuesday’s meeting of the Board of Commissioners.

That influx, he said, caused significant anxiety in the communities.

With the board’s approval, the request will go through several revisions before the county establishes a formal contract with 1-800-BOARDUP and the American Red Cross.

The 1-800-BOARDUP promise is to be at a damaged home within an hour of being called to board up doors and windows, protecting the interior from the elements, curious kids and anyone else who might wander by.

County residents still could choose other emergency relief groups but would always have those two trusted options.
