Commissioner Election Process to Stay the Same

The way that Cherokee County voters elect their commissioners will likely stay as it is following a move this week by the .

There had been some discussion by the county’s legislative delegation about changing the process; the legislature is the only body that can change the process. But the group had indicated that they wouldn’t if the commissioners didn’t want them to.

The way it works now is that voters in the eastern district of the county, Posts 1 and 2, elect those commissioners and the voters in the western district, Posts 3 and 4, elect those commissioners. The chairman is elected county-wide.

The change discussed by legislators would have allowed only those voters in a specific post to vote for their commissioner. It’s something Commissioner Karen Bosch championed Tuesday night at the board’s regular meeting.

Calling the current system “antiquated” she said that voters get confused when other candidates outside of their post are on the ballot.

But Commissioner Jim Hubbard disagreed,  saying that the current system allows voters to elect three of the five members on the board.

In the end, the board voted in favor of keeping the process the way it is. Chairman Buzz Ahrens joined Bosch in favor of a change.

A formal letter will be sent to the legislative delegation expressing the board’s wishes to keep the current process.
