Travel Eased in Cherokee County

A new project will add lanes to congested parts of I-75 and I-575.

A new project from the Georgia Department of Transportation will help and Hickory Flat residents traveling outside of the city.

Today GDOT issued the final request for proposals for the West by Northwest project that will create a new managed lanes system to Interstates 75 and 575 Cherokee County, according to a GDOT press release.

 Additions include:

  • 18 miles of new lanes along I-75 from Akers Mill Road to Hickory Grove Road
  • 11 miles of new lanes along I-575 from I-75 to Sixes Road
  • Two new managed lanes along the west side of I-75 between I-285 and I-575
  • A reversible lane along both I-75 and I-575 north of the I-75/I-575 interchange

Construction is set to begin in spring of 2013. The targeted opening date is fall 2016.
