Rabies Confirmed in Cherokee

Health officials confirm that a raccoon that recently attacked a dog in Ball Ground has rabies.

 On May 3, the raccoon attacked a dog on Hightower Trail in Ball Ground, according to a release from the health department. 

There was no human contact and the dog was up-to-date on its shots. Only a 45-day home quarantine was required.

Officials are encouraging people to stay away from unfamiliar animals and to keep pets and livestock vaccinated.

If you are attacked by an animal, wash the wound with soap and water before seeking immediate medical attention.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, the symptoms are similar to the flu and may last for days.
