Child Safety Efforts Put Cherokee on Top

The county's fire department was named Lead Agency of the Year.

Safe Kids Georgia has awarded  its "Lead Agency of the Year" designation for local efforts to prevent accidental childhood injury.

The honor was announced during Safe Kids' May 4 gala at the , fire spokesman Tim Cavender said.

Cherokee Fire houses the county's Safe Kids program. Led by Capt. Chad Arp, the department's fire safety educator, Safe Kids Cherokee focuses on child passenger safety, animal bite prevention, water safety, and bike and pedestrian safety.

Most recently, Safe Kids Cherokee hosted a child safety seat check at the Harmony on the Lake subdivision.

"Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services provide vehicles, trailers, fire apparatus, manpower and supplies necessary for the events," Cavender said. "The fire department’s desire to help is the driving force behind Safe Kids Cherokee County."
