Cherokee Woman Burned in House Fire

A 66-year-old woman is in serious condition after she received burns in a house fire that destroyed her home Saturday morning.

A Waleska woman suffered serious burn injuries in a house fire that broke out early Saturday morning.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to the call at 10364 Fincher Road around 7:15 a.m. and discovered a home about 75 percent engulfed in flames, said Tim Cavender, director of public affairs with the agency.

A woman, 66, informed firefighters "she woke up feeling hot and
realized the home was on fire," he added.

The woman then retrieved her grandchildren — ages two, eight and 11 — and got them out of the house. The woman's husband, a 69-year-old man, was also able to vacate the house without any injuries.

The woman, however, received first-, second- and third-degree burns to the back of her head and back, and was transported to Grady Hospital's Burn Unit in serious condition, Cavender said. The home was destroyed in the fire, which also closed one lane of Fincher Road. The blaze is under investigation by a Cherokee County fire investigator.
