Cherokee Fire Named EMS of the Year

The agency received the Region One EMS of the Year award at a banquet in Dalton.

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services was recognized as the Region One EMS of the Year last night.

The agency received the award during a banquet held in Dalton. 

"I was very honored to receive this award on behalf of our agency," said Cherokee County EMS Chief Danny West, adding Cherokee is one of 16 counties in the Region One district. "The Region One EMS District members is known for being the...leaders in EMS throughout the state, which makes it tough to be selected for this award."

Emergency medical service providers are vetted through a rigorous process an evaluated by experts from six states. The award is is given to any EMS and/or license first responder or air ambulance service that's able to maintain high performance level and has also made contributions that benefit the citizens. 

Cherokee County Fire Chief Tim Prather added he was also proud of the agency's success.

“This was the night that we reap the benefit of all the hard work, training, dedication and EMS service that we provide," he said. "I commend EMS Chief Danny West and his team for their leadership in reaching this accomplishment."

The county received the EMS of the Year Award in 2008, the same year it also was given the Georgia Emergency Medical Service of the Year Award. 

Thursday's recognition now places Cherokee Fire as a nominee for the statewide award, which will be presented on May 22. 

Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services Medical Director Dr. Jill Mabley was also awarded the Dr. Virginia Hamilton Special Service Award, which is given to a person who has contributed to the development, implementation and delivery of medical services in the region and across the state.
