Cherokee Explorers Bring Home Top Awards

The youth team that studies fire and rescue tactics won big at the national competition.

' Explorer Post 469 brought home six trophies from the Winterfest Competition in Gatlinburg, TN. More than 3,200 youth competed in drills to test their knowledge of fire and emergency procedures.

The Explorers placed first and third in "The Pittsburg Drill" that simulated rescuing a down firefighter through multiple obstacles.

They placed first in the "Z-Drag" where they had to rig a rope
rescue system to remove a victim from a hostile environment.

The Explorers placed second in "The Advanced Emergency Medical Competition," a written exam, trauma practical and medical practical.

They placed third in "Save your Skin" which resembled a crew
of disoriented firefighters having to locate their hose line and navigate their way
out of a hostile environment.

They placed third in the "Entanglement," a combat challenge type event that tested their skills in the use of a ladder, knowledge of knots, strength, and their ability to navigate through an entanglement situation.
