Cherokee High School presents "To Kill a Mockingbird"

Cherokee High School theater department will perform "To Kill a Mockingbird" this coming Friday and Saturday night. Advance ticket sales available, but not necessary.

Coming this Friday and Saturday only, January 18 and 19, 2013, the  Cherokee High School theater department will present the classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, written by Harper Lee in 1961. The two act play runs approximately two hours, with a fifteen minute intermission. The theatre, the largest in the county with nearly eight hundred seats, allows ample room for large or small groups. This story, commonly a book challenged for censorship, is shared with us by a unique cast. The producer, Mrs. Leia Taylor, in her third year with the school, has ventured away from the tried and true comfort level that comedies have provided the department in recent history by saying, “I felt we were ready to tackle something a little more thought provoking this year.” That being said, this story deals with mature themes, and that should be taken into consideration when planning your attendance.

Mrs. Taylor proudly introduces the audience to a predominately female cast, that includes many talented ninth graders. I had the pleasure of learning more about a cast member, Miss Dixie Ray. Seventeen year old Miss Ray is a senior at Cherokee High School, in Canton, Georgia. In this, her fifth play, she plays the part of Miss Maudie, the narrator of the show. From Shakespeare, her most challenging acting role, to the stage manager role she took in Ruthless, the Musical, Miss Ray says that the past two years of theater involvement at Cherokee High School have really made her “think of it as more than just fun.” Her short term goals include saving up for college, and then she intends to major in performance theater and minor in technical theater.

Come out and support our local theater and Miss Ray this Friday and Saturday night.

Tickets are $5, and can be purchased online at http://www.cherokeeplayers.com<http://www.cherokeeplayers.com, or at the door, for $7.
