The early voting period for the run-off has been slow, with 220 people who voted early at the Cherokee County Election & Voter Registration Office in downtown Canton.

Additionally, the office mailed out 97 ballots and around 60 have been returned to the office.

Both Turner and Laurens came in first and second respectively in the Jan. 8 special election to fill the seat. However, neither candidate garnered the majority of votes needed to avoid the run-off.

The seat had been vacated by Sean Jerguson, who ran for and lost the Georgia Senate District 21 seat to Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Brandon Beach in the special election.

The Senate seat was also vacated due to the resignation of Chip Rogers.
