Cheerleaders Take First, Teachers Dress Down for Charity

These are the five things you need to know on Oct. 5.

We’re not into fall temperatures yet. The high today will be around 82 degrees with a low tonight at 52 degrees. The National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook yesterday for dangerous conditions for burning. Stay with Holly Springs Patch today to see if that continues.

Elementary schools are serving reduced fat nachos or a turkey corn dog, seasoned rice, corn, lettuce, tomato and mixed fruit. Middle and high schools are serving beef ravioli, garlic breadsticks, green beans, and garden salad.

The Competition Cheerleaders won first-place at the War Eagle Cheer Classic last weekend in Gainesville. The squad, composed of freshmen, sophomores and senior cheerleaders, is in their first competition season.

Teachers at kicked of Breast Cancer Awareness month by joining Lee Denim Days. For a donation of $20, teachers can “dress down” in denim and pink on Mondays in October. Faculty and staff were able to raise $700 for the breast cancer research.

Athletic Director Charlie Beverly will be inducted into the Virginia High School Hall of Fame on Oct. 17. According to a press release from Virginia, Beverly “laid the foundation for a baseball dynasty at J. J. Kelly High School. Nearly 35 years after throwing his last pitch for the Indians, he still is regarded as the most dominating pitcher ever in Southwest Virginia.” He averaged 2.07 strikeouts per inning; had a career 0.95 ERA; threw five no-hitters and one perfect game, pitched nine shutouts and back-to-back no-hitters twice. He was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers and received a scholarship to play baseball at the University of North Carolina. He graduated from Florida State in 1982 and earned a master's degree from East Tennessee State University in 1986.
