Tibetans' Hunger Vigil Saturday
Tibetan hunger strike in Atlanta is an opportunity to teach our children about others' in the world and to educate ourselves about the situation in Tibet.
I think most of us know that Tibet has troubles but not many know what really is going on. Not many of us understand why the Dalai Lama and millions of other Tibetans are displaced. And what is that self-immolation about? I know – that's unpleasant – quick! change the channel!
If you'd like to know more or if you'd like to take a break from rushing around buying things for a bit, consider this. In an act of solidarity for the self-immolaters and others who strive for a free Tibet, the Atlanta Tibetan Community is organizing a 12-hour hunger strike and program in Centenial Olympic Park/CNN Center this Saturday the 24th.
I can think of no better way to teach our children about a world awareness and to drop the "me-me-me" thinking of the holidays than to expose them to an event like this. We blessed, fortunate Americans should aalways remember gratitude, awareness, and perspective. It's too easy to avert our eyes and not recognize that other people in the world truly suffer, struggle, and do without. I encourage you to learn more about the crisis in Tibet and join the Tibetans of Atlanta for even a little bit of time on Saturday.
