Fifty Sequoyah High School students visited neighboring Hickory Flat Elementary School to celebrate Read Across America Day.

The Sequoyah High students read to students in Hickory Flat ES classrooms as part of the event honoring Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

“It is a wonderful opportunity for the high school students to mentor and give back to their community while promoting literacy,” Sequoyah HS Principal Elliott Berman said.

Sequoyah High’s Baseball Program recently held its annual Queen of Diamonds Pageant, with 20 student competing for the title of 2013 Queen of Diamonds, which was won by Demi Wilson.

The contestants were: Sarah Barth, Erin Bethke, Olivia Byers, Kimiya Crayton, Jamie Davis, Karson Delbridge, Katie Dickerson, Rebecca Gallo, Dakota Hughes, Hannah Kidd, Madison Locke, Katie Neely, Jordan Pendley, Anna Beth Potter, Liz Prance, Caroline Schulte, Shalima Siddiq, Emilie Sins, Sydney Webb and Demi Wilson.

The runner-ups were: Madison Locke, first; Anna Beth Potter, second; Rebecca Gallo, third; and Katie Neely, fourth; with Madison Locke winning the People’s Choice Award

Each year one Varsity Baseball Player is crowned King of Diamonds.  The 2013 King of Diamonds is Russ McGlamry.

Sequoyah High students Austin Leslie, Elissa Martin, Hannah Fisher, Jordan Haley, Aileen Nicolas and Chet Shacklett were selected to participate in the University of Georgia Janfest Honor Band event earlier this year.  Janfest provides the opportunity for selected students to work with some of the finest conductors in the country and meet fellow outstanding high school band students.

The Cherokee County Fan of the Week organization at its annual banquet honored the 2012-13 Fan of the Week participants and two football players from each Cherokee County School District high school who exemplify outstanding character and leadership traits.  The two Sequoyah High players honored are football players Logan Honea and Trenton Dorner.

“Logan and Trenton have represented Sequoyah Football at the highest level and we are very proud of their accomplishments,” Principal Berman said.  “Their selection for this award is well deserved.”

The Fan of the Week organization provides the opportunity for students in the county who are faced with special challenges and circumstances in their life, to participate and be a part of the football game day experience.  Often times, this is an experience these children would not otherwise have.  Most often elementary school students nominated by their teachers or others in the community, these youth become part of the team for one exciting Friday night, participating in pre-game meals and pre-game festivities on the field, including throwing out the first pass and having their name called on the PA system in the stadium.  The culmination of the season involves a banquet and trophy presentation.

Clint Shaw, an assistant coach at Cherokee High School, started the Fan of the Week program in an effort to give more students the ability to experience what it is like to be part of a high school football team.  The youth selected have persevered through special challenges in their life and the recognition they receive on game night and in the year-end banquet creates a special moment for them to share with family, friends and their favorite high school football team.
