Charter Teacher Honored

Congratulations to Cherokee Charter Academy teacher Kara Reeder for receiving the “New American Hero” award from the Clarion Council for Educational Greatness.

A CCA parent who applauds Mrs. Reeder’s honor said, “Mrs. Reeder is an incredible teacher who not only wants her students to learn, but she wants them to encompass the Strive characteristics in their everyday life just like she does.”  STRIVE is CCA’s character education curriculum and stands for Students Taking Responsibility for Important Values of Excellence.

The Clarion Council says a “New American Hero goes above and beyond for students, provides excellent and innovative educational experiences for students, demonstrates exceptional support to help students be successful, goes out of his/her way to provide help to an individual student or group of students and is a great role model for putting students first.”

One of Mrs. Reeder’s fellow teachers said, “She always treats students, faculty and staff with respect and with a smile.  She genuinely cares about her students’ well-being. “

Mrs. Reeder is a sixth grade science teacher with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education (with a minor in Biology) from the University of Dayton and a Master’s Degree in Education, Instruction & Leadership from Oakland University.  She has 11 years experience in the classroom.

Families at Cherokee Charter had a special opportunity to learn more about the problem of bullying when Mrs. Reeder organized on-campus screenings of the award-winning film “Finding Kind.” Sixth graders also had a day dedicated to anti-bullying discussions and team building activities. Cherokee Charter was the first school in Georgia to screen the documentary.

Mrs. Reeder says becoming a teacher was a natural decision for her and that “each time a student shows the same enthusiasm I have for science, or acts with a conscience and makes good choices, I am rewarded and reminded that the time, effort and love I put into teaching is worth it 100 times over.”
