Young Students Learn Self-Defense
Cherokee Charter Academy is Cherokee County's only public charter school. CCA opened its doors to students on August 15, 2011.
Kids in grades 2, 3 and 4 at Canton's Cherokee Charter Academy learned a valuable lesson in taking responsibility for their personal safety. The students took part in a hands-on class designed to empower them to protect themselves from predators.
The lesson came from the organization, "Revved Up Kids." David Neal, the group's co-founder, said the students received the lesson for free, in memory of Jorelys Rivera, the Canton Elementary School first grader abducted and slain a year-and-a-half ago. “It’s important that children understand that there are dangerous people in the world and that they have tools to defend themselves. We give the children information in a non-frightening way, and we teach them how defend themselves from dangerous people.”
During the workshop, students learned simple self-defense techniques to escape from a much larger and stronger attacker.
